DHENKANAL: With the onset of summer the demand of cold beverages increases manifold. And the town serves a variety of natural and cooling options to its denizens to survive the hot scorching summers. While SHGs are raking in moolahs with squash and butter milk, the markets are flooded with shops selling lassi. The crowd at the Mishra Lassi shop at Meena Bazaar near old bus stand says it all. The whole family engaged in the business remains busy serving glasses of lassi with as many as 10 ingredients from 10 am till 11 in the night. With each glass priced at ` 20, the family makes about ` 20,000 at the end of the day. There are as many as 20 lassi and fruit juice shops in the town quenching thirst. Tribals flock the town with handia, the most preferred drink of the daily wagers. Two glasses of ‘masala handia’ is all Ramakant Nayak consumes to beat the heat. These are reasonably priced between ` 5 and ` 7 a glass. The early morning rush at Bhagbanpur, Similia, and Rameswarpur near Megha hills and adjacent areas for date palm juice is hard to miss. One glass of the beverage and you have the strength to work all day through, says Bibhudhenu Barik.Similarly, the local SHG sell 100 bottles of squash priced at ` 40 every day. The other options are cold coffee, cold milk and butter milk available at different squares of the town. Besides, the menu of hotels lists pakhal with butter milk and potato fry for ` 20.
