BHUBANESWAR: Armed with scientific temper and hope for a better future, tribal students from various high schools across the State attended the State-level science project exhibition at the Adivasi Ground here. This was part of the tribal children’s festival Sargi Fula-2011 that concluded on Wednesday.Over 40 teams from different high schools participated in the exhibition and presented their projects on various themes including land resources _ its use for well-being and safe future.The innovative ideas projected by these students, belonging to economically backward section, through models and drawings on chart papers impressed not only the organisers but also the visitors at the venue.Thirteen-year-old Soubhagya Majhi and his friend Lipsarani Pradhan from Bhojpur Government High School in Sambalpur displayed their model on protection of forest and wildlife in the State. The model suggested placing of electric sirens and fencing of forested areas to prevent entry of human beings inside them to fell trees and kill animals. Goura Mohan, a 14-year-old student of Tapovan High School near Khurda, shared his study on hindrances in hilly areas which affect multiple crop farming and suggested ways how the farmers in these areas could improve their produce in quality as well as quantity. He also created a model through which farmers can use solar energy for drawing water sources for irrigation in hilly areas. ‘’I spent 15 days on the project. I would like to implement it in my village if I receive infrastructural support,” said Mohan.Two of the projects that found appreciation from all were automatic electricity system for energy conservation by Archana Hembram of Kujidihi High School in Mayurbhanj and electricity generation from cow dung by Hemanta Bagh and Sudam Kalo of Lahandabud High School in Sundargarh. Archana said she created the model keeping in mind the electricity wastage with students forgetting to switch off lights and fans in her hostel. A variety of experiments, ranging from a smokeless chullah, an automatic system of street-lighting to a paper recycling project, also found place at the fair. Curtains came down on the Sargi Fula fest with the 720 participating students demonstrating the skills acquired during the last three days of the festival. Workshops on various themes were organised during the festival.
