A Chennai woman was arrested for allegedly forcing her 14-year-old sister into prostitution. Police have so far arrested eight people including the sister and detained two others in the case. The arrested accused include three women, a priest, a cable technician of Selaiyur and a petty shop owner of Triplicane.
According to a report by The Hindu, the 14-year-old was abandoned by her parents in Chemmencheri, following which, moved to Paduvanchery to live with her sister.
Quoting police officials, an India Today report said the sister and her mother-in-law forced her into prostitution and used to take her to various locations, including KK Nagar and Chengalpattu.
A child welfare committee in Chengalpattu alerted the police, following which a special team was formed by Selaiyur All Women police and the girl was rescued.
On the basis of call records and investigation, the police arrested six people — Lakshmi, Prakash, Damodharan, Kavita, Karpagam and Srinivasan. Two more suspects have been detained and are being questioned in relation to the case.
Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
