Chennai: The city will soon get another 100 mld of water from the Nemelli desalination plant before the monsoon and the city will have adequate stock even in the event of an erratic monsoon, according to Metro Water sources.
Sources told City Express that the Nemelli plant is expected to be commissioned in September 2012 and the city will get an additional supply of 100 mld of water. “The city is also expected to get another 180 mld of Cauvery water through Veeranam tank before the monsoon,” the sources said.
This comes in the wake of reports raising doubts about the Indian monsoon following America’s National Oceanic and Atmosphereic Administration stating that the odds of an El Nino phenomenon developing in July through September are dead even at 50-50.
Metro Water sources rejected the reports stating that they were in touch with the regional meteorological department and hadn’t heard anything about an erratic monsoon. “Even if that be the case the state has adequate resources to supply water to the city,” sources said.
Apart from this additional 280 mld of water, the city is getting 100 mld of water from the Minjur desalination plant. “We will get an additional 500 mld of water from Krishna,” the source said and the city will then have 880 mld of water. The city supplies 830 million litres of water per day.
Krishna water will help fill the gap in storage in the city’s four reservoirs and we will get the full quota of water, the source added.
