KOCHI: The idiom ‘Charity begins at home’, has been rightly proven by the staff and students of Bhavan’s Varuna Vidyalaya, Thrikkakara. The students are doing meritorious service to society.“On occasions like their birth day or festivals, students bring pocket money from their homes for celebrations. After celebrating in an austere way, they raise the balance amount for charity work”, says S Sunitha, principal.Similarly, as part of inculcating reading habit among the students, each one contributes a paltry sum to subscribe English dailies in the school. After reading, the scrap newspapers are sold and the amount collected is utilised to buy medicines for cancer patients at the General Hospital, Ernakulam. The students also extend helping hands to the needy by bringing homely snacks like cutlet, samoossa, burger etc from home and sell during celebrations like youth festivals in the school, at a rate little higher than the market price. The amount collected in this way is utilised for buying sewing machines for the poor womenfolk of underdeveloped Kothad Island on the outskirts of Kochi. As part of the charity mission titled ‘Handful of rice programme’ (Pidiyari), students bring a handful of rice from their homes which is later distributed to the poor people of old-age homes and orphanages in and around Kochi."All this shows that charity with or without raising money can render a big help to the needy. We are inculcating such a noble thought and deed in our students”, says Sunitha. The students are aware of the noble deeds they are involved for various causes. Apart from the students, their parents, especially mothers, have been relentlessly supporting the school authorities in this regard.
