PARADIP: A three-member Central team visited several villages of the worst-hit Tirtol block of Jagatsinghpur district on Thursday to assess the damage in the recent flood.The team, led by Suhir Saxena, Senior Consultant with the Drinking Water and Sanitation Ministry, visited Samantrapur, Bilaspur and Sirasta villages in Tirtol block. They verified the breaches and crop loss in these villages besides interacting with the villagers.Earlier, the team held a review meeting with the district officials at Paradip. The flood damage has been estimated at around ` 93.89 crore with ` 60 lakh towards loss of dwellings.The flood ravaged 126 villages under 43 panchayats, while marooning 107 villages. One boy reportedly went missing. Besides, vast tracts of paddy field have been destroyed due to breaches at 18 places in Tirtol, Kujang, Biridi and other areas of the district. Official sources said 2,223 kutcha houses have been damaged in the flood with 1,838 being partially hit and another 313 severely. As many as 72 houses have caved in rendering people homeless.The district administration has already paid compensation amounting to around ` 20 lakh toward house loss. District Collector Narayan Chandra Jena and Paradip ADM Surjeet Das accompanied the Central team.
