London: The Duchess of Cornwall will spend the Diana memorial day on Friday walking alone in the mountains after her worst row with Prince Charles since their marriage over her decision not to attend the royal ceremony to mark the Princess of Wales' 10th death anniversary.
She is again feeling like ‘Public Enemy No 1’, British tabloid The Sun on Tuesday quoted an unnamed source close to Camilla as saying. The 60-year-old Duchess will stay at Prince Charles’ Birkhall estate in Aberdeenshire while the royal family and millions of Britons remember Diana on Friday.
According to the Daily Mail, Camilla felt she had been let down by her husband and his advisers, who repeatedly reassured her that it would be 'appropriate' to attend the Princess Diana memorial ceremony at the Guards Chapel.
She was particularly angry that courtiers allowed matters to drag along for so long, making her 11th-hour decision not to attend Friday's service seem the result of being boxed into a corner — when the truth was that all along she had grave misgivings about attending.
Camilla's role on the 10th anniversary of the Princess' death has been deemed so sensitive that she has even refused to fly from Scotland to London with Charles and the rest of the Royals. The debacle has left her feeling 'humiliated and depressed', according to the daily.
And she is taking extreme care to make sure she is not seen indulging in any activity that might seem frivolous. The decision by Camilla — once famously described by Princess Diana as the 'third person' in her marriage — follows revelations that she has been forced to ditch plans to attend the memorial service.
The source said she had been left 'furious and upset' by the way the issue had been handled. Princes William and Harry, who unwittingly provoked the latest royal crisis by inviting their stepmother, are also deeply unhappy.
Quoting friends, the Daily Mail said that while they do not blame Camilla for the debacle, they are angry that their beloved mother's memorial service has been 'hijacked'. A friend said: "They want it to be a celebration of their mother's life and achievements and an occasion for contemplation of a life cut tragically short."
