Brit tourist death: Goa CM says no to CBI probe
Sources say police have begun probing the role of top drug dealers.

Panaji: Forty-eight hours after claiming that British teenager Scarlette Keeling was murdered, the Goa Police are yet to make a major breakthrough in the case.

Yet Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has rejected family's demand for a CBI enquiry.

“Police are investigating the case in right direction. There can be more detentions. I don't think there is any need to hand over this case to CBI,” said Kamat.

Sources say police have begun probing the role of top drug dealers. This after a British eyewitness claimed to have seen Scarlette drunk and high on drugs, hours before she was found dead.

He also claims to have seen bartender Samson D'Souza with her. D'Souza is in custody on rape charges.

Said Goa IGP, Kishan Kumar, “The people involved in this case used to consume drugs.”

But several questions remain unanswered.

  • The motive behind the murder is still unknown.
  • Why the drug angle is coming up three weeks into the probe?
  • Did the Goa police have prior knowledge of the British eyewitness who has surfaced now?

But Kamat seems confident in his police force. He even seems to think, the whole episode is being deliberately played up.

“Even tourist should take enough care while moving around at late nights. The possibility of a deliberate attempt to malign Goa's image cannot be ruled out,” he said.

But the Centre seems unwilling to take that chance. Tourism minister Ambika Soni says a Toursim Task Force to ensure tourist safety will be formed soon.
