KOCHI: Hitting out at the Congress, the BJP said that the ruling party was so worried of the Opposition that it has made such baseless allegations of an unholy alliance between the BJP and the CPM.“The Congress does not want Opposition to gain strength. As Opposition parties, it is natural that there could be some similarity in approach regarding certain issues, BJP senior leader O Rajagopal told ‘Express.’ He was reacting to the statement made by KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala, alleging a strong and secret alliance between the CPM and the BJP. Chennithala had said that the amnesty given to some jailed BJP activists during the previous Achuthanandan government and the BJP’s support extended to M V Jayarajan when he was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment in a contempt of court case were proof of the alliance between the two parties.“With regard to price rise, law and order situation and favouritism, the Opposition fights against the ruling party,” he said. Stating that Chennithala had made such a statement with some political motive, BJP state president V Muraleedharan said it only showed the weakness of the ruling party. Noting that the BJP always fought against corruption, he said that the Congress could not tolerate the fight that it had launched , and this prompted them to make such ridiculous statements. “No one has forgotten that the previous Congress-led UPA government had the support of the CPM. How is that the Congress can forget the past and make such statements?” he asked. On the Congress allegation that the alliance between the CPM and the BJP had resulted in giving amnesty to jailed BJP activists during the fag end of the previous Left government, Muraleedharan said such an incident had never happened. BJP activists might have been freed from the jail but they were given amnesty only according to the jail rules, he said. Moreover, the Congress had not made such an allegation at the time of their release but only had come out now, which only shows their weakness, he said. On the Jayarajan issue, Muraleedharan said he had said nothing about the court verdict but had only pointed out that the court had behaved hatefully to Jayarajan by not granting him time to approach the Court. This had nothing to do with politics but was only a humanitarian issue, he noted. “It was the Congress that had allied with the CPMduring the Assembly elections to defeat Rajagopal. The Congress had made it clear that they had tried to defeat Rajagopal,” he said.
