Baghdad: A rally was held for Muntadhar al-Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at former US president George Bush.
The rally was held in a predominantly Shiite neighborhood. Protesters demanded al-Zaidi's release, warning of "grave consequences" if he was not freed.
Muntadhar al-Zaidi's trial in the assualt case starts on Thursday. The 30-year-old reporter was to go on trial in December on charges of assaulting a foreign leader but his defence team won a delay as it sought to reduce the charges to simply insulting Bush
Al-Zeidi's case became a focus for Iraqis and others in the Muslim world who resent the US invasion and occupation.
Al-Zeidi has been in custody since the incident on December 14 and his family claims he was beaten and tortured in detention.
