BANGALORE: For some, the wounds of the trees that were cut down on Sankey Tank Road have not yet healed. Rubbing salt to their wounds would be this piece of news — at least another 20 trees will be felled on the road soon.On Friday, the city saw severe protests from environmentalists, local residents against the tree cutting on Sankey Tank Road. Later the matter went to the court. But now official sources from BBMP say that they have identified another 20 trees in and around Stella Maris school. However, Stella Maris Convent has obtained a stay order from the sessions and civil court. So the trees in their premises are still not touched.Official speaksWhen contacted S Harish, deputy mayor, he neither denied nor accepted that another set of trees will be cut. “The matter is in the court. I cannot tell anything at present,’’ he said.Expert speaksNoted environmentalist Suresh Heblikar said that if the trees are chopped like this, Sankey Tank will dry up one day. Trees on this stretch are big, and that means more capacity to observe carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Not just this, these trees have more capacity to hold moisture.
