New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday boarded a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus outside his office at Delhi Secretariat with his Metro Card, thus inaugurating Delhi Government's 'Common Mobility Card' scheme.
The scheme is aimed at making travel more convenient, seamless and cashless for commuters in the national capital. The CMC or Common Mobility Card can be used by commuters to board both the Delhi Metro and DTC busses across the city.
Speaking to the press while deboarding the bus, Kejriwal said, "Today is a very important day for the city of Delhi and its people. We have launched the Common Mobility Card, which can be used by commuters in both Delhi Metro and in DTC busses. In fact, this common mobility card can be used in any mode of transport in Delhi that has an electronic ticketing system."
He added, "As of today, this card is be used in the Delhi Metro, 200 DTC busses and 50 cluster busses. From April 1 onwards, the card will be functional in all DTC and Cluster busses across the national capital."
When asked why there was such a delay in rolling out the card, which was first conceived by the Sheila Dikshit government, Kejriwal said, "You should ask her (former CM Sheila Dikshit) why there was a delay. But whatever the reason for the delay, what's important is that now the card is here and it will make life easier for the residents of Delhi."
The Common Mobility Card comes at a time when the Delhi government is locked in a battle with the Centre and the office of the Lieutenant Governor over the hike in Delhi Metro fares.
