PUDUCHERRY: Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has successfully performed an artificial disc replacement surgery (ADRS), in the spine for a couple of patients. ADRS is a relatively new surgical technique which helps in preserving the movement post surgery.Dr Roopesh Kumar, associate professor of neurosurgery, in a release on Thursday said spine surgery, till recently considered taboo in society due to apprehensions about its safety and efficacy, is increasingly being accepted due to the remarkable relief it confers on patients. New and sophisticated technology like artificial disc replacement has added to the safety profile of spine surgery, he said.On investigating with MRI scan of the neck on a 32-year-old female doctor presented with neck pain at JIPMER, it was detected that the cervical disc at one level (gel-like substance that acts as cushion between two vertebrae and enables movement of spine) was found to have completely collapsed due to degeneration following wear and tear. Subsequently, an artificial disc replacement surgery was successfully performed on the patient. Thanks to ADRS, the patients can go back to active professional life within two weeks, he said.
