Merrut: Even as India celebrated its 69th Independence Day and saluted the sacrifices made by freedom fighters, came a news that two days ago an Armyman was lynched in Meerut for trying to save a teenager from a group of eve teasers.

On Thursday night, 31-year-old Lance Nayak Ved Mitra Chaudhary managed to overpower a group of men who were eve teasing a girl, and forced them to flee. But minutes later, the eve teasers returned with some accomplices and attacked Chaudhary with rods and bricks.

The Armyman succumbed to his injuries later.

"4-5 boys were teasing me and then my father, brother and the soldier intervened. The soldier got slapped and a fight broke out," the girl said.

The incident led to a lot of protests by the local residents and they have demanded strict action against the accused.
