Mumbai: An alert guard foiled a theft of Rs 17 lakh from a UTI Bank ATM at Bhandup, West Mumbai.
Two men were arrested, including an employee of the bank’s maintenance department in the case.
On Saturday Manohar Sadanand Bharti, claiming an employee of the bank, entered the ATM and asked the guard to pull down the shutter.
When the guard peeped through the ATM, he saw Bharti dismantling the ATM and taking money out of it. After that guard called the police.
According to the senior Inspector of Bhandup Prakash Jadhav, Bharti was taken into custody and he revealed that Bharti’s friend Nilesh Pednekar masterminded the plan.
Pednekar is a employee of the UTI Bank. He was arrested from Kannamwar Nagar in Vikhroli, East Mumbai on Sunday morning.
Pednekar said that the plan was hatched a month ago. He got hold of an identity card and pasted on his friend’s photo on it with an authorised signature.
Pednekar said he gave Bharti a sketch explaining how to remove one part so that money can be taken out.
