After Contest Over Speaker's Election in MP, Cong-BJP Now Spar over Deputy Speaker's Post
Congress leaders refuse to follow the tradition of appointing Deputy Speaker from the Opposition

Bhopal: Post the Assembly boycott by the BJP during the Speaker election, the party is now locking horns with the Congress for the Deputy Speaker elections scheduled for Thursday.

The BJP had accused the Congress of making a mockery of constitutional provisions during the election of Speaker.

The Congress and BJP on Wednesday elected Hina Kavre and Jagdish Dewda respectively as candidates for the post of Deputy Speaker.

Kavre, 33, is the daughter of former Congress minister Likhiram Kavre and is considered close to party president Rahul Gandhi. While Jagdish Dewra is a former Transport minister of MP whose name had surfaced in a scam in the past.

According to tradition, the Deputy Speaker post goes to the opposition. Former Assembly Speaker Dr.Sitaraman Sharma says that he is hopeful that the Congress would do the same.

Congress Minister Sajan Singh Verma, however, has spoken to the media stating that the post won’t be offered to the opposition. “It was the BJP who started the war and we would go all out in the election of Deputy Speaker,” he said.

Earlier, the Congress had declined to offer Deputy Speaker’s post to the opposition when the BJP had decided to contest for the post of speaker and not back the Congress nominee.
