Aamir has since long made a place for himself in B'wood that no one can compete with. Wish the actor on his b'day.

New Delhi: Who can forget the chocolate boy crooning Papa kehte hain (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak) and the charming ruffian trying to romance a pretty lady in Aye, kya bolti tu (Ghulam)? The man behind the mask - actor Aamir Khan, turns 42 on Wednesday.

One of the finest actors in Bollywood, Aamir has since long made a place for himself in the film industry that no one can compete with. Known for his character-driven roles in films, Aamir portrayed every role with a sense of detailing and intensity that put him in a completely different caliber of actors.

He’s best known for his highly-acclaimed performances in Raja Hindustani (1996), Earth (1998), Lagaan (2001) and Dil Chaahta Hai (2001) and last year’s cult film Rang De Basanti.

But what sets Aamir apart from other actors is not just the powerful roles he has played. He’s always been a mysterious person in a sense from the average Bollywood stars: He’s picky about the roles he chooses and likes sticking to just one film a year, he doesn’t attend film award functions and is relatively reclusive.

In an interview last year with CNN-IBN Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai, the actor clarified whether it was a conscious decision that Aamir Khan is part of Bollywood and yet not part of it.

“I want to clarify that the people in this Indian film industry belong to the very society that you and I belong to. We are the same human beings, a part of us become film people and a part of us go into other fields but we are the very same people. So what I am trying to say here is that in society as a whole, I think we need more people to take a stance, not only in the film industry but people from in every walk of life and every part of society should be more responsible,” he said.

Last year, his involvement and comments on the Sardar Sarovar Dam issue invited the wrath of Gujarat's polity and his film Fanaa was blacked-out in the state.

But he stuck by his stand despite becoming a 'hate figure' for some. “I am not somebody who likes to go out and say things. I would like to react and say what I feel and say what I feel when something happens,” he said.

Starting out in Bollywood as a child actor in the film Yaadon Ki Baarat, Aamir today has reached a stage where he influences the minds of several people, especially since he enjoys a fair amount of credibility.

For that and much more, Aamir Khan will always be a force to reckon with in Bollywood and society.
