A Tribute To Prem Nazir, Laila Cottage Stands As A Monument Of Memories

Even though it has been more than three and a half decades since Malayalam film legend Prem Nazir passed away, his achievements are still discussed. It was on this day in 1989 that Nazir, then 62, breathed his last in a Chennai hospital.

Apart from the series of records Nazir Prem created on screen, he is remembered by all as a down-to-earth person with a big heart. Apart from his career, there is one thing that people still talk about Prem Nazir’s house Laila Cottage in Thiruvananthapuram is filled with memories. People from different places visit this place to experience the magic of his memories. This house was built by Prem Nazir in the year 1956. The house is situated near Kattumurakkal Bridge on Korani Road near Pulimood junction, Chirayinkeezhu in Kerala.

Although the house is 60 years old, there is no significant damage to the house. However there were rumours that the house was going to be sold in 2022, but Prem Nazir’s family denied this news and renovated the house.

The house is a proud monument for the locals and fans. Prem Nazir, who was friendly, wealthy and known for his hospitality, loved to receive his fans in his house. Preserving the memories of Prem Nazir, Laila Cottage is a landmark in Kerala’s film history.

Prem Nazir made his acting debut as Shylock in the play The Merchant of Venice (1951) while he was a student at SB College, Changanacherry. He won the Best Actor award for this role in the play directed by Sheppard. His first film was Marumakal (1952), directed by S. K. Chari and produced by Paul Kallungal. He was seen as Abdul Khader in this film.

His breakthrough role in his career came with Visappinte Vili (1952), his second film, made by Telugu director Mohan Rao for K&K Combines (Udaya Studio). During the shooting of this film, he was renamed Prem Nazir by Thikkurussi Sukumaran Nair. Prem Nazir began his career at a time when drama was the most popular visual medium and films were still in their infancy. He started working for Excel Productions (Udaya Studio) and most of his films were for Udaya and Merryland Studios.
