He is rumoured to be India’s very own Inspector Clouseau. But no, the SAB TV channel heads insist that Jaankhilavan Jasoos is not inspired by the Inspector of Pink Panther. In fact, they way the character Jaankhilavan is an antithesis of Detective Karamchand, the carrot munching detective of a TV show that appeared on an Indian TV channel back in 1984.
At a press conference organised to meet and greet the cast of SAB TV’s latest new show Jaankhilavan Jasoos, albeit there were many questions regarding its OTT resemblance to the heavily accented, distinctly obtuse but the lovable celluloid character Inspector Clouseau, famously portrayed by veteran Hollywood actor Steve Martin.
Anooj Kapoor, Business Head of SAB TV said, “There have been many questions raised, today and earlier whether Jaankhilavan is a prototype of Inspector Clouseau of Pink Panther. That might just be a coincidence. We had our very own Indian detective Karamchand who was introduced in 1984. But even Jaankhilavan is completely opposite to the genuinely sharp Karamchand.”
However, the audio-visuals that were shown to the press distinctly reminded us of the fictional French detective. His clumsy efforts at solving cases, distorting evidences by mistake, sprouting gibberish at the drop of a hat and being armed with two assistants who don’t do great deal of helping him either were well, quite loud and clear.
Kapoor continued his attempts at negating the Pink Panther angle by further stating, “It would be wise to say that Jaankhilavan Jasoos is a blend of two of our serials, CID and Gutur Gu (a silent comedy show).” Director Prabal Baruh added, “Inspector Clouseau and Jaankhilavan Jasoos cannot be compared. We have taken a long time to develop this idea…”, and adds emphatically, “six months”. With a few B-Town films recently coming under the scanner for blatant copy of Hollywood flicks, it only remains to be seen how SAB TV’s latest show fares under the watchful eyes of international production companies.
