The Central Crime Branch of the city police made two more arrests on Thursday in connection with the back office fraud at a leading multi-national bank that came to light in August.
The prime accused, a woman employee of a leading IT company entrusted with the back office operations of the bank, was arrested in August.
A CCB team led by Inspector K Vijayakumar, acting on a specific input, rushed to Tiruchy and nabbed Mohana Murali (35), a real estate dealer and a classmate of the prime accused from school, and Sriram (31), Mohana Murali’s business partner.
Police sources said that Prasheetha (34), a resident of Tiruchy working as a senior manager with Tata Consultancy Services in Chennai, was heading the back office operations of the multi-national bank. She had access to critical information on accounts and allegedly misused them to siphon off money from dormant accounts having high balance. Though the complaint, filed by TCS associate vice-president Venkatnarayanan on August 17, mentioned the sum looted to be Rs 45 lakh, investigations revealed that the embezzled money ran up to over Rs 80 lakh, police said.
The modus operandi was quite ingenious. Prasheetha would manipulate the addresses of the dormant accounts citing Mohana Murali’s or Sriram’s address. She would then generate requests for issue of ATM-cum-debit cards to be shipped to the modified addresses.
Subsequently, the duo would receive the ATM cards at their address in Chennai and would produce fabricated photo-identity proof to receive the cards and the corresponding PIN numbers.
They would then withdraw money from those accounts. However, the fraud was detected by the bank which, in turn, brought it to the notice of TCS.
Based on the complaint filed by the company, a case was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including cheating and criminal conspiracy.
