New Delhi: A rain-marred day in the capital saw a deluge of goals with NCC forward NG Jenish pumping in a whopping four goals while Assam striker Nayan Syoti Kuli and Lalthansanga of Mizoram notched up hat-tricks in their respective matches at the 54th Subroto Cup here Monday.
N G Jenish (19th,25th, 35th, 45th) led the way as NCC (West Bengal & Sikkim) humiliated Vivekananda Vidyapeeth, Raipur, Chhattisgarh 12-0. S Chittaranjan (33rd, 39th, 50+1) and L Monish (16th, 38th, 48) also notched up hat-tricks.
The rain drenched ground did cause problems for Chhattisgarh custodian Vishal Satrani as he struggled to grip the ball properly on several occasions. The NCC boys, however, seemed at home in the conditions as they simply toyed with their hapless opponents. Their build-up play was a delight to watch and only a few wayward shots in front of goal prevented them for winning by a bigger margin.
Meanwhile, Betkuchi High School, Assam needed a win against Tyne High School, Srinagar, J&K to seal a last eight spot and Kuli's (7th, 24th, 36th min) sizzling form made sure his team did just that. Rahul Gayary (5th,29th), Tridev Boro (28th, 33rd), Manindra Kachari (40th) and Pintu Kalita (34th) completed Assam's tally.
Government Middle School Kolasib, Mizoram also staked a claim for the quarters thanks to Lalthansanga's (3rd, 18th, 42nd) hat-trick which enabled them to post a 6-0 win over Don Bosco High School, Maharashtra. Lalampuia (32nd, 33rd) and Ganlol Lunga (35th) were the other scorers.
In another match, formidable St Xavier's School, Dhanbad, Jharkhand blanked Mamta Modern Senior Secondary School, Delhi 4-0. The loss knocked Delhi out of the race for the quarters. Defending champions Greenwood School, Nagaland will face arch-rivals North-eastern English School, Manipur in the first quarterfinal tomorrow.
