‘Big Dave’s Back’: What Fans Said About David de Gea’s Return To Club Football After 15 Months
Following the brief absence, David de Gea signed a one-year deal with Fiorentina. His new contract also has the option to extend for an additional season with the Serie A side.

Manchester United legend David de Gea has returned to club football after being out of action for nearly 15 months. The Spaniard will compete in Serie A for ACF Fiorentina. The 33-year-old left Manchester United last year after his contract expired but endured struggles in finding a new club.

Football media outlet FTBL has shared a post on Instagram in which the Spanish goalkeeper can be seen wearing a Fiorentina shirt. The veteran goalkeeper looked focused as he pointed towards the club badge. “DEAL DONE, David de Gea is back,” the post read. De Gea also shared a post from his account to confirm the news.

Seeing David de Gea make a surprise return to football fans couldn’t contain themselves from reacting to the post. One of them wrote, “Top 10 GK of all time.”

Another opined that the Spaniard’s arrival to Fiorentina has now made the club a title contender. “Now Fiorentina is ready to fight for the title,” he said.

One added, “Big Dave’s back!”

Another was excited to see De Gea return to football and said, “I’m so happy for him. Hope he gets his mojo back.”

“Fiorentina is conceding the least goals in their history this season,” wrote another fan.

The Spaniard’s absence from football was quite puzzling for everyone considering everything he has achieved in England. De Gea departed from Manchester United as a four-time winner of the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, while also winning the Golden Glove in the 2022/23 Premier League season. However, the Red Devils chose to bring in Andre Onana leaving the exit door open for the Spaniard. Now the 33-year-old is back in action as he looks to deliver some top-class performances for the Italian side.

It is speculated that the primary reason why it took so long for David de Gea’s return to football was his hefty salary demands. The Spaniard has reportedly taken a massive pay cut to make the current deal possible. He is now set to be presented to the Italian media next week on Monday. He could also make his debut with the club against Parma on August 17.

Fiorentina finished eighth in the Serie A last season and will now have to qualify for the Europa Conference League. They haven’t won a major trophy since their Coppa Italia triumph 23 years ago. However, David de Gea will be looking to change that in the 2024/25 season.
