An analysis of overall performance of candidates sitting for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) between 2020 and 2024 shows that the average marks scored and the cut-offs declared each of these years have been in consonance and that the results were not abnormally different this year, the National Testing Agency (NTA) is learnt to have stated in its response to one of the writ petitions being heard by the Supreme Court in the matter.
According to the NTA’s response, the cut-off scores are determined based on the overall performance of candidates each year. “The increase in cut-off reflects the competitive nature of the exam and higher performance standards achieved by the candidates this year,” the agency stated.
In 2020, it said, which was the year of the pandemic, 13,66,945 appeared for the test. The average marks scored by candidates out of 720 (which are the full marks) were 297.18 while the cut-off for general category stood at 147, as per the reply filed.
In 2021, 15,44,273 students sat the test when the average marks scored were 286.13 while the cut-off was 138. While 17,64,571 students appeared in NEET-UG in 2022, the average score was 259 and the qualifying marks were 117.
Similarly, in 2023, when 20,38,596 sat for the exam, students scored 279.41 while the cut-off was 137. In 2024, 23,33,297 sat the test with an average score of 323.55 while the cut-off reached 164. This was the first time when over 23 lakh students had appeared for the test.
The NTA maintained in court that a higher number of candidates shows the overall improvement in results due to a larger pool of talent.
The Supreme Court is hearing a bunch of petitions filed post the announcement of results of NEET-UG on June 4 demanding scrapping of the test. The exam was conducted on May 5 at around 5,000 exam centres across India. Soon after the results, the test ran into allegations of irregularities and leaks in some centres including Patna and Godhra.
No perfect scorers at Patna, Godhra where alleged leaks occurred
In case of Godhra, which had only two exam centres, none of the candidates had a perfect score while only a few even made it upwards of 600. In case of one of these centres where 1,860 students sat the test, only 804 qualified while at the second centre, of the 654, who appeared for the test, 268 qualified. The agency stated that the leak in this case was prevented.
In Patna, which had 12 exam centres, only a single student scored between 719 and 710 while only three scored between 709 and 700. Maximum of the remaining students scored between 549 and 500.
The NTA in its reply to the SC is learnt to have said that there is no major variation of marks at these exam centres as well, even if there had been an attempt to allegedly leak the paper.
Also, the agency stated that an analysis done by it of the top 100 scorers in the test this year shows that these were from 95 different centres, spread across 56 cities and 18 states and union territories, hence, there is no question of a leak beyond the specific centres at Patna.
