On the sidelines of a briefing about GST, Prakash Kumar, Chief Executive Officer at Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), told News18 they get two types of queries from people regarding the new tax -- How to log into the website of the GST portal and they have forgotten their password.

What are the two most common types of queries about received on the helplines of the GST Network?

How do I log in? I forgot my password, what do I do?

More than a week into the Goods and Services Tax (GST) era, people are still unsure about how to log into the website of the GST portal. Or if they have registered and forgotten their password, they are all at sea.

This was revealed by Prakash Kumar, the CEO of the GST Network, on the sidelines of a briefing about the new tax.

"You'd be surprised," Kumar told News18 to a question about the 2 top types of queries that the common public is calling in with. "These are the two of the most common kinds we have been receiving," he added.

Although the transition from VAT to GST has been relatively smooth, people still have a lot of doubts about the functioning of the new system. And it is evident that basic technical issues are top on their minds.

The GST Network is the IT Backbone of the new tax system. As such, every potential assessee has to register on the web portal and upload information about transactions, returns and other data to their accounts on the portal. Any entity with a turnover of greater than Rs 20 lakh per annum has to register with the GST Network.

Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia and Prakash Kumar were among the officials who were addressing a 'masterclass' at the press centre on Monday to answer queries regarding GST. The topic for today was 'registration and migration'.

Migration refers to the process by which tax assessees who had registered under the previous VAT/service tax/excise regime would have to migrate to the GST regime. According to information provided to News18 by GST Network Chairman a week ago, there are 80 lakh such entities out of which 67 lakh had migrated. There were also 2.5 lakh new registrations.

There are fears that the GST registration are needlessly complicated and require a lot of tech infrastructure. Debunking these allegations, Adhia said that the process was simple and would take only 15 minutes.

Today's masterclass was broadcast live on the press information bureaus social media handles on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube with the hashtag #AskAdhia. The queries received, which were more technical, were answered by the Finance Ministry officials.
