Mumbai: The markets made a smart entry into the new September series. After opening flat the markets surged higher and were trading strong throughout the day. The Sensex closed at 11,778.02 up 79 points. The Nifty gained 22 points to close at 3435.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,814.26 up 0.6 per cent or 35 points.
The BSE Midcap Index gained 1 per cent or 48 points to close at 4,846.2.
All the BSE sectoral indices closed in the positive terrain.
The BSE Health Care Index gained 2 per cent at 3,610.33. Divis Labs, Orchid Chemical, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer and Novartis India gained.
The BSE Auto Index rose 2.13 per cent at 4,971.16. Tube Investment, Ashok Leyland, TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto and MICO were among the giners.
The BSE Bankex was up 1.4 per cent at 5,380.79. IOB, Canara Bank, HDFC Bank, Centurion BoP and ICICI Bank moved upwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index rose 1 per cent at 7,794.59. Lakshmi Machine, Thermax, Siemens and SKF India closed higher.
The BSE Metal Index gained 0.8 per cent at 8,158.84. Jindal Saw, Sterlite Ind and SAIL witnessed selling pressure.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index gained 0.5 per cent at 5,688.48. GAIL, BPCL and Kochi Refin rose higher.
The BSE FMCG Index closed was up 0.22 per cent at 2,034.15. Tata Tea, Nirma and Colgate closed in green.
The BSE IT Index was flat at 4,287.11. HCL Info, Wipro, Mphasis BFL, Infosys and Patni Computer moved northwards on the bourses.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 5888.64 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 16921.54 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2798.55 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 25608.73 crore.
