New Delhi: The markets crashed heavily in late trade due to profit booking in metal, auto, FMCG and pharma stocks. The Sensex ended down 268 points. The Nifty slipped 86 points. All BSE indices ended in red.
The Sensex closed at 11,646.78, down 268.46 points or 2.25 per cent. It touched an intraday high of 11,953.00 and an intraday low of 11,621.61.
The Nifty ended at 3462.65, down 86.25 points or 2.43 per cent. It touched an intraday high of 3552.65 and an intraday low of 3433.55.
The CNX Midcap closed at 4927.15, down 67.75 points or 1.36 per cent. It touched an intraday high of 5022.40 and an intraday low of 4921.90.
The BSE Small Cap Index ended down 24.12 points at 7,065.44. The BSE Midcap Index closed at 5,596.88, down 75.90 points or 1.34 per cent.
The market breadth was negative, about 1052 shares advanced, 1402 shares declined, and 67 shares remained unchanged.
The total market turnover recorded at Rs 60898.72 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 9119.58 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 4570.3 crore.
The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 47208.84 crore. The Nifty May Futures slipped to 10 points discount. The Nifty Futures added 45 lakh shares in total Open Interest. Tata Steel, Reliance, Satyam, Reliance Cap and SBI were the top trades.
Biggest losers on the indices were Cipla, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, NTPC, Tata Power, IPCL, Sail and MTNL.
The BSE Metal Index underperformed the other indices. It ended at 10,074.55, down 2.93 per cent or 304.24 points as selling was seen in Jindal Saw, Jindal Steel, Jindal Stainless, Tata Steel, Sail, Welspun Gujarat, Hindalco and Nalco.
Auto stocks like MRF, Tata Motors, Hind Motors, Maruti Udyog, Cummins, Bajaj Auto, Apollo Tyres, Escorts, Hero Honda, TVS Motor and M&M also skidded. The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,340.21, down 2.61 per cent or 143.35 points.
Pharma stocks including Cipla, Aurobindo Pharma, Orchid Chemical, Sun Pharma, Nicholas Piramal, GSK Pharma, Ranbaxy Labs, Aventis Pharma, Cadila Health and Divis Labs also ended lower. The BSE Healthcare Index ended down 2.59 per cent or 101.50 points at 3,823.01.
The BSE FMCG Index closed at 2,229.08, down 2.44 per cent due to losses in Dabur India, Britannia, Tata Tea, Colgate, ITC, HLL and Nirma.
Technology stocks like HCL Tech, Hexaware Tech, TCS, MphasiS BFL, Satyam and Wipro were also down on selling pressure. The BSE IT Index closed at 4,010.80, down 1.89 per cent.
Oil stocks including MRPL, Reliance, Kochi Refineries, BPCL, ONGC and Gail also tumbled. The BSE Oil & Gas Index ended down 1.82 per cent or 101.61 points at 5,487.18.
The BSE Capital Goods Index ended at 8,612.40, down 1.54 per cent or 134.42 points. Capital goods stocks like Thermax, Greaves Cotton, ABB, Siemens, Ingersoll Rand, Carborundum, Crompton Greaves, Alstom Projects, L&T and HEG also finished in red.
Banking stocks including Canara Bank, PNB, Bank of Baroda, SBI, IOB, Union Bank and Bank of India also lost ground. The BSE Bankex ended down 1.10 per cent at 5,111.03.
Consumer durables stocks like Whirlpool, Samtel Color, BPL, Titan Industries and Mirc Electronics also slipped. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed at 3,400.81, down 0.54 per cent.
