New Delhi: The market ended the day with marginal gains amid an extremely volatile trading session. However, they outperformed its Asian and European peers.
The markets picked up momentum in the noon with inflation numbers for the week ended April 28 coming in lower at 5.66 per cent versus 5.77 per cent.
Also the manufacturing and industrial output numbers came in strong. The mid caps and small caps outperformed the frontline indices giving markets an even breadth on the back of large volume.
Sensex closed up 24.93 points or 0.18 per cent at 13796.16, and the Nifty up 9.85 points or 0.24 per cent at 4076.65.
About 1236 shares have advanced, 1255 shares declined, and 81 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,851.27 up 35.15 points or 0.6 per cent. The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 6,984.40 up 33 points or 0.47 per cent.
The BSE Bankex was up 0.6 per cent at 6,905.10. Bank of Baroda, Federal Bank, SBI, Centurion BoP moved upwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was flat at 9,871.53. Alfa Laval, Alstom Projects, SKF India, Bharat Elec, Siemens closed higher. The BSE Health Care Index was down 0.5 per cent at 3,679.91. Nicholas Pirama, Wockhardt, Sun Pharma, Cipla closed lower.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,022.87 up 0.5 per cent. Sundaram-Clayto, Bajaj Auto, Exide Industrie, Tube Investment, TVS Motor ended higher.
The BSE Metal Index closed at 10,065.76 down 0.4 per cent. Hindalco, Tata Steel, Sterlite Ind, Hind Zinc advanced lower.
The BSE FMCG Index closed down 1.1 per cent at 1,798.86. Britannia, HLL, Colgate, Shaw Wallace closed lower. BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 7,188.67 up 0.5 per cent. Reliance Natura, MRPL, BPCL, Reliance ended in green.
The BSE IT Index up 0.94 per cent at 4,924.12. Moser Baer, TCS, Mphasis, HCL Tech, I-Flex Solution closed higher. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 9392.53 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 38697.93 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4435.78 crore.
Total market wide turnover was at Rs 52526.24 crore.
