Highest close for Sensex since May 12

Mumbai: The markets had yet another strong session making some hefty gains on the back of buying seen in scrips across sectors.

The Sensex closed at 12,274.27 up 165.13 points or 1.36 per cent. The Nifty gained 50 points to close at 3553. The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,036.17 up 37 points or 0.6 per cent.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,041.87 up 33 points or 0.65 per cent.

All the BSE sectoral indices are trading in green.

The BSE Health Care Index was up 1 per cent at 3,639.15. Wyeth, Ipca Labs, Cadila Health, Apollo Hospital and Nicholas Piramal closed higher.

The BSE IT Index lost 1.2 per cent at 4,434.28. TCS, Satyam, Hexaware Tech, Wipro and I-Flex Solution advanced.

The BSE Metal Index was up 1.3 per cent to close at 8,217.89. Jindal Saw, Jindal Steel, Sesa Goa, Nalco and Hindalco ended higher.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index gained 1.3 per cent to close at 5,751.09. Reliance Natural, ONGC, GAIL and IOC closed higher.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 1.06 per cent at 8,191.90. Carborundum, KEC Infrastructure, Aban Offshore, Crompton Greave and BHEL closed higher.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,225.93 up 1.2 per cent. Bajaj Auto, Asahi India, Apollo Tyres and Bharat Forge were among the gainers.

The BSE Bankex was up 1.6 per cent at 5,734.87. Oriental Bank, Federal Bank, Canara Bank, Kotak Mahindra and Vijaya Bank moved upwards.

The BSE FMCG Index rose1.95 per cent at 2,083.96. HLL, ITC, Dabur India, Colgate and Nirma closed in green.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 7114.6 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 26385.25 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3434.9 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 36934.75 crore.
