New Delhi: A day after a call centre employee was stabbed to death in Bangalore, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) Thursday called for tighter security of BPO staff members.
"The security of the personnel working in the $30 billion IT and ITes industries is of paramount importance for maintaining not only the confidence of the employees, many of whom work for night shifts, but also the investors," said ASSOCHAM president Anil Agarwal in separate letters to chief ministers of Karnataka, Delhi and Haryana.
The request was made to these three states as they host the maximum number of BPOs and IT firms.
Agarwal said it was a matter of grave concern that a second woman employee was found murdered in Bangalore, the city that has otherwise done the country proud in terms of establishing its brand equity in the global IT and outsourcing arena.
"We request the state administration to take all the necessary measures to tighten the security on the city roads as also near the areas housing the IT firms," the letter to Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy stated.
ASSOCHAM has also asked its constituent chambers, the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Bangalore Chamber of Commerce, to provide full support to the security agencies.
In his letter to Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the ASSOCHAM president expressed his anxiety over the safety of the BPO personnel, especially the women, who commute day and night from the national capital to the adjoining Gurgaon.
"The administrations of both Delhi and Haryana must act together in checking the increasing incidents of murders and other heinous crime," said Agarwal.
He has urged the BPOs also to get police verifications for all the drivers of cabs picking and dropping the staff.
