UK's King Charles 'Secretly' Initiates Succession Planning Amid Health Concerns: Report
King Charles III is reportedly planning succession involving Prince William, excluding Prince Harry. Recent cancer diagnosis accelerates planning

UK’s King Charles has purportedly initiated his succession preparations, keeping them tightly under wraps, particularly from his estranged son, Prince Harry, according to British media reports.

Last week, during a meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Charles said he was reduced to tears by messages of good will following his cancer diagnosis. The palace announced earlier this month that the British monarch had been diagnosed with a form of cancer, less than 18 months into his reign.

After his cancer diagnosis, he reportedly began crafting a definitive strategy for the monarchy’s future, with a focus on passing the reins to Prince William, according to insights shared by royal expert and author Tom Quinn. “Succession planning is highly secret and no one trusts Harry to be part of it, for the simple reason that if he feels in any way slighted or not given what he feels he deserves, he will run straight to the media,” Quinn told the British daily Mirror.

Quinn, who wrote “Gilded Youth: An Intimate History of Growing Up in the Royal Family,” suggested that William, the heir to the throne, is “at the heart” of the King’s succession plans. “Charles is also aware that, as future king, William is at the heart of the succession planning that is taking place right now. Officials had assumed Charles would remain healthy at least into his mid-80s before succession planning would need to begin but in fact, it has now begun and indicates perhaps that Charles’ cancer is more dangerous than we have been led to believe,” Quinn added.

Last Wednesday’s meeting was the first formal in-person audience Charles has held with PM Sunak since it was revealed that he was suffering from an unspecified form of cancer. Buckingham Palace has said the king will continue to carry out state business and his official paperwork while he undergoes cancer treatment. Sunak began the exchange by telling Charles it was wonderful to see him looking so well. “Well it’s all done by mirrors,” Charles joked.
