Russia’s Highest Civilian Award – The Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle
The Order was established in 1698 by Tsar Peter the Great, in honour of Saint Andrew, the first apostle of Jesus, and patron saint of Russia. It was bestowed in a single class and was only awarded for the most outstanding civilian or military merit. During the Tsarist era, it housed the throne of the incumbent monarch.
This award was instituted over 300 years ago. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is the first Indian leader to be conferred with this award.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the honour bestowed on PM Modi symbolises the depth of India-Russia ties.
