Vikrant Massey’s impressive performance in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail recently earned him the prestigious Best Actor (Critics’) title at the Filmfare Awards 2024. This win marked Massey’s debut victory at the awards ceremony, where he competed against other talented actors such as Manoj Bajpayee, Pankaj Tripathi, Rajkummar Rao, Abhishek Bachchan, Jaideep Ahlawat and Vicky Kaushal. The film, based on the 2019 book of the same name, explores the life and challenges faced by IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma. As the film completes 100 days, a viral picture from the movie set featuring Manoj, Vikrant, Shraddha Joshi and Medha Shankr has been making rounds on the internet.

Adding a delightful touch, everyone is dressed in similar attire. Both the IPS officer and the actor are wearing red checked shirts. 12th Fail not only earned Massey the Best Actor (Critics’) award but also won awards in multiple categories at the Filmfare Awards 2024, including the Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Editing. Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the filmmaker behind the project, shared in an interview with Times of India that it was Rajkumar Hirani, who had suggested him to turn Manoj Sharma’s book into a film. Interestingly, Hirani also proposed Massey’s name for the lead role.
The director recalled, “Manoj Sharma came to me with the book and requested me for a blurb in the book. I saw a book Ke peeche Raju Hirani and Sachin Tendulkar ne taarif ki hai. I called Raju. He was like this book is a film. I asked will you direct it? But he was busy with something. Then I started writing and I fell in love with the script. It was Raju who suggested Vikrant’s name. I had seen his film A Death in the Gunj and I had liked him. Vikrant inspired me to direct this film.”
While the theatrical release of 12th Fail may have received a minimum response, the film’s popularity surged after releasing on OTT platform. Audiences, impressed by the movie’s gripping story, flooded social media with well deserved praise. Well known Bollywood actors such as Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Kamal Haasan and others also admired the film.
