In many cities of India, the street food culture is widely prominent. Roadside vendors attract a lot of business as they provide a cheaper and more mobile eating experience than restaurants. While the street food culture is loved here in India, time and again, there have been concerns regarding hygiene. If you are fond of eating Chinese food or noodles from kiosks on the roadside, this video might make you think again.

A viral video has led to renewed concerns over the hygiene of street food preparation. The clip from Kukurghati village in Uttar Pradesh shows a street vendor washing noodles in a river. The video has sparked debates on social media, underlining the need for strict laws and a greater understanding of safe food handling practices in public areas.

We know that while making chowmein, the noodles are first boiled and then washed. Rinsing the noodles helps prevent them from clinging to one another and slows the cooking process, making it simpler to stack the ingredients. Normally, it is done with clean cold water before frying the noodles but a video from Kukurghati village shows a vendor, carrying the boiled noodles in a tray and dipping it inside a river in clear view of everyone present. One of the bystanders made the video and is even heard making sarcastic comments about the extremely unhygienic way in which the noodles were washed.

Indian street food sellers are under fire for failing to uphold adequate standards, which has made hygiene a heated topic even outside the borders of the country. However, when Africans started making humorous TikTok videos ridiculing Indian street cuisine, the situation took a humorous turn.

Desis, on the other hand, didn’t take it lightly and responded to these widely shared videos by pointing out how ironic it was for people who were experiencing food shortages to make fun of a nation they were unable to overtake.
