In the evolving world of culinary trends, indulging in pizza has become a widespread guilty pleasure for food enthusiasts worldwide. This universally cherished dish, however, has not been immune to the rising trend of peculiar culinary experiments. From watermelon and Oreo pizzas to those adorned with dry fruits, the internet has consistently presented various offbeat renditions of the classic Italian delicacy. Breaking the mold once again, the latest experiment introduced to pizza aficionados is the enigmatic blue pizza.

The viral sensation began when pizza chef Gabriel Reboul shared a video on Instagram, showcasing the unconventional process of crafting this azure-hued pizza dough. In the video, Chef Reboul combines spirulina and ice cubes in a dough mixer, creating a visually stunning ice-blue dough. Before dividing the dough, a drizzle of olive oil adds a touch of richness. Departing from the traditional tomato-based pizza sauce, the chef adheres to the colour theme, opting for pesto sauce and cheese as the toppings. The pizza is then baked in a woodfire oven. Surprisingly, post-baking, the blue hue seems to disappear from the pizza’s surface, revealing the vibrant colour only upon breaking into the dough.

Contrary to expectations, this unique hue isn’t achieved through conventional food colouring but rather through the incorporation of a nutritious ingredient known as spirulina. Sharing the video, Chef Reboul expressed his perspective, stating, “Can you guess the hydration? If you ask me, there isn’t enough blue food.”

As soon as the post surfaced on the internet, the comment section quickly filled with numerous reactions. Many viewers expressed their excitement and amusement as they saw the viral video while some viewers initially mistook the blue dough for slime until the application of olive oil.

Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “I wasn’t paying attention and was 100% sure this was slime until there was oil on it.” Another commented, “Thought it was slime, I love watching the process of folding dough.”

Clarifying the misconception, a user explained, “For all of these comments, it’s not blue food dye, it’s Spirulina which is made from algae and is amazing for you/highly nutritious.”

“I honestly thought this was slime up until he took it out of the oven,” an internet user noted.

The video was shared two weeks ago on Instagram. Since its posting, it has garnered over 42 million views with numerous likes and comments. This unexpected twist to a classic favourite has ignited a culinary craze, leaving everyone intrigued and eager to taste the unconventional.
