When it comes to artists, we anticipate nothing less than the extraordinary. Even in the simplest of celebrations, like a birthday bash, we expect them to add a touch of magic that transcends the ordinary. Well, leave it to the UK’s artistic maestro Damien Hirst to exceed those expectations. This time, instead of a masterpiece hanging in a gallery, he crafted something equally awe-inspiring for a very special occasion – his girlfriend Sophie Cannell’s 30th birthday.
Hirst, 58, famed for his provocative art that often explores themes of mortality, wealth and the human condition, has made headlines once again. With a net worth estimated at $384 million (Rs 3187.2 crores), he is not only Britain’s richest living artist but also a master of unconventional gifts.
The celebrations took an extraordinary turn as Hirst unveiled a cake that was not just a treat for the taste buds but a work of art in itself. Shaped like Cannell’s pregnant body with intricate detailing of her insides and a large unborn baby inside, the cake was a declaration of Hirst’s unique vision.
Inspired by his piece The Miraculous Journey, which showcases the development of a fetus in the womb through giant bronze sculptures, the cake was a blend of artistry and celebration. While some might find blowing candles over such a creation unusual, in the world of Damien Hirst, it’s just another day of pushing boundaries.
The couple jetted off to Las Vegas for the occasion, marking another chapter in their love story that began at a luxury London restaurant where Cannell once worked as a waiter. Since announcing their impending parenthood with a baby bump photo last November, Hirst has remained tight-lipped, expressing himself instead through his art.
Recently, he shared NFT artwork featuring pregnancy emojis, a modern twist on celebrating life’s milestones. This is perhaps his way of acknowledging the journey into fatherhood once again, having three sons – Connor Ojala, Cassius Atticus and Cyrus Joe – from his previous relationship with Maia Norman.
But extravagant gestures are nothing new for Hirst. From sculpting Cannell’s body for a Mayfair restaurant to gifting her a £166,600 (Over 1,74,00,000) 18-carat gold Rolex Pearlmaster adorned with 713 gems, he has never shied away from grand gestures.
