Over the years, there has been a massive migration of people from villages to cities, especially from states like Bihar and Jharkhand. Those who have settled away from their small towns or villages in big cities often reminisce about their native home. Now, a Maithili song that evokes nostalgia about one’s hometown is going raking in likes. The song is performed by a group of singers who take turns singing lyrics from the popular song Hamar Manak Gaam Me. The singers’ melodious vocals are complimented by soft music from ukelele. The song’s title ‘Hamar Manak Gaam Me’ roughly translates to ‘In our little village’.
This video has gathered over 43,000 views since it was posted on February 24. Commenting on it, an Instagram user wrote, “Best that I saw and heard today.” However, not all people liked the video. Many argued that the singers did not pronounce Maithili words properly. Making this point, an Instagram user wrote, “Their pronunciation of Maithili words are not even matching doesn’t feel like real…annhaar and not annar.”

Maithili is one of the 22 official languages of India. It is spoken in parts of Bihar and Jharkhand in India and Koshi and Madhesh Provinces in Nepal. Maithili is considered to be one of the many Bihari languages. It shares similarities with neighbouring languages like Bhojpuri.
The above-mentioned video is not the only Maithili song that has captivated the netizens. Back in August last year, two young girls sang the Maithili song ‘Badra’ in a much-loved video. The song ‘Badra’ is about welcoming the arrival of the rainy season. In a video, two sisters, Divya and Jia Jha sang the song alongside music from an acoustic guitar. This clip gathered hundreds of likes on X.
