Viral pic showing the number plate of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud's car leaves internet divided.

A picture of the number plate of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud’s car has recently gone viral after a man claimed it to be belonging to the CJI and shared it on social media. Taking to ‘X’, angel investor Lloyd Mathias shared the picture of the black Mercedes which has a number plate – DL1 CJI 0001. Now ‘Chief Justice of India’ getting a special abbreviation, that is, CJI on his number plate wasn’t a common thing, leaving the internet fascinated.

However, the OP shared the picture alongside a humourous caption that read, “Saw Chief Justice of India, Dhananjay Chandrachud at a private function in Delhi yesterday. On my way out, I couldn’t help notice his car’s licence plate number: DL1 CJI 0001. Very cool. Wonder if the Chief Election Commissioner’s car number plate is DL1 CEC 0001?”

Initially, social media users marveled at the unique number plate. However, it later emerged that the vehicle actually belonged to the registrar of the Supreme Court of India and was designated for the use of the current CJI, DY Chandrachud.

Some users pointed out the misleading nature of the post, with one saying, “Very cheeky tweet!! but rather misleading….This car belongs to the Supreme Court of India and is designated for use by the current CJI. Vehicle is registered to the Registrar of Supreme Court of India. It is not CJI Chandrachud’s personal vehicle” Another shared a screenshot of the car’s registration details to disprove the false claim, noting, “Name doesn’t look like Dhananjay Chandrachud.”

Furthermore, some criticised the OP for sharing the number plate on a public platform. “I’m just wondering when it became okay to take photographs of another person’s car and put it on social media, regardless of who they are,” said one. Another questioned, “Chief justice of India knows that you are sharing his car with full number on a public platform ?”

Since being shared, the post has amassed over 790K views on the site.
