Meet The Las Vegas Man Who 'Scaled Everest' At Home And Set Guinness World Record
The man is the fastest person to reach the height of Everest using stairs.

A man had his name registered in the Guinness World Record (GWR) by climbing the height of Mount Everest without ever visiting the actual mountain. Sean Greasley achieved this record by spending nearly 23 hours going up and down the stairs of his Las Vegas residence and covering 8,848.86 meters. Greasley completed the climb in just 22 hours, 57 minutes and 2 seconds, which makes him the fastest person to reach the height of Everest using stairs. Revealing the reason behind his achievement, the man shared that he wanted to raise funds for suicide prevention after he experienced mental health struggles during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When he live-streamed his record attempt on YouTube on September 3 and 4, 2021, he managed to raise $409.85 (approximately Rs 34,000) for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. According to GWR, he was allowed to take breaks, but the timer kept running all the time. Greasley also set some rules for himself and decided not to use the handrail while climbing. He explained that climbers don’t have that option while climbing the real mountain.

Speaking with GWR, Sean Greasley said, “I decided to break this record because nobody has done this before, not from sea level anyway. I wanted to raise money for suicide prevention, so I figured I would combine these two goals into one major goal. We were nearing the end of COVID-19 and I was having a lot of mental problems and issues, which is why this charity is very close to my heart."

In another video, Greasley shared the process and explained he built a special software to track his steps. He also set up several cameras to capture his climb with audio and created a drink station halfway up the stairs. After completing his final round of climbing, he came down and fell on the floor, exhausted and in pain. As the video continued, Greasley struggled to walk properly and couldn’t bend his legs. He humorously mentioned that “tomorrow is going to be worse," while his wife joked about ordering a wheelchair to help him.

Sean Greasley mentioned he lost 10 pounds and burned around 9,788 calories during his climb. He felt a lot of pain in his calves, upper back, thighs, lower back and knees. During the challenge, he changed his clothes 6 or 7 times, took a 20-minute nap to rest and listened to music for 20 minutes. After finishing the climb, he enjoyed 6 beers. Greasley also added that he couldn’t use his phone much because it hurt his upper back. He planned to watch some shows and even learn French during the climb.
