The name Bat Soup would evoke mixed reactions from the users with many cherishing it as a delicacy while others criticising it as a harmful dish. Keeping these reactions aside, a video of a woman cooking bat soup for her children has surfaced on Instagram. The video shows the lady holding the dead mammal, still with fur and body parts intact, and displaying it in front of the camera. The clip then shows the mammal’s pieces in a bowl and the lady showing their insides closely to the audience. She then goes on to put all the pieces in a bowl and starts boiling it to form the soup by occasionally stirring it with a spoon. While cooking, she stops for a while tastes it, and makes a happy face indicating her admiration for the mammal’s meat. She then serves the remaining bat’s flesh pieces to her three children who enjoy savouring them.
Social media users lambasted the lady for this video and wrote that everything should not be consumed. One of the users wrote that these people will be the confirmed cases of the Ebola virus. As per the reports, in the majority of cases, humans have contracted the Ebola virus after coming in contact with infected wildlife. These include bats or great apes obtained for food. Another user criticised the lady for learning nothing from the coronavirus.
While the video’s location is not known, Bat soup is reported to be a popular dish, particularly in Wuhan, China. In Wuhan, the virus is understood to have originated at an open-air fish market.
Is bat soup safe
In some places in the world, eating bats is illegal due to the danger of zoonotic diseases (infections that are spread between people and animals). Besides the Ebola virus, Bats are also known to carry the Marburg virus, passing them on to humans who come into contact with them. These mammals may also host henipaviruses and strains of rabies.
In a similar instance, a Thai video blogger was arrested after filming herself eating a bowl of bat soup. This video sparked outrage amid concerns about the risk of new pandemic viruses jumping to humans.
