Haiti Crisis: How Gang Violence Turned This Country Into A War Zone
The months of gang violence in the capital city of Haiti–Port-au-Prince have forced the government into retreat.

Haiti, a country on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea, is engulfed in violence by heavily armed gangsters. As per the experts, it is believed that the most important immediate cause for the latest spasm of violence in the country is the Haitian politicians increasing dependence on street gangs. The media reports state that the bullets are fired from every house now and then. The dead bodies are seen lying on the road before they begin to rot and become a meal for the animals like pigs and other scavengers. The months of gang violence in the capital city of Haiti–Port-au-Prince have forced the government into retreat. The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned that the country is close to becoming a failed state soon. Recently, three Christian missionaries in Haiti were shot and killed in an ambush by a gang in Haiti. These are some of the many daily deaths which occur in Port-au-Prince.

The capital city of Haiti has become a war zone in recent weeks as gang violence erupts leaving locals forced to buy barricades to protect their community. The immigration officer Noune-Carme Manoune said, “Every day I wake up and find a dead body” as quoted in a report. According to the United Nations, within the first 3 months of this year, 2500 people have either been killed or injured. According to the April report of Daily Star, 90 percent of Haiti is being run by heavily armed gangsters.

LA Times reports that many areas have become so dangerous that people are afraid to wander on the streets. Those who have money are stockpiling necessities like water and medicine while the locals avoid the gang-controlled areas. Philippe Branchat, International Organisation for Migration Chief in Haiti said that the people living in the capital are locked and have nowhere to go.

Several media reports state that the bodies of Haiti’s National Police personnel who gangsters killed are still not found. Stories have emerged that the innocent people who usually mind their business are being killed by stray bullets every day.

John Rousselet Joseph died due to violence in the Solino area of Port au Prince. One of his cousins said that he got hit by a bullet while he was crossing the road. The cemeteries are also said to have been booked by Haiti gangsters.

According to the United Nations, more than 3 lakh people, including many children, have been forced to flee their homes.
