Many people have difficulties related to healing after they undergo some kind of surgery. The opening due to surgery is stitched together to help the wound heal. Yet, there remain high chances of infection from the wound. It is very rare to have the intestines forced out of the body due to heavy sneezing. Something similar happened to a 63-year-old man from the US. An old man accidentally had a part of his intestines hanging out of his body after he sneezed hard. According to news from the New York Post, a 63-year-old man from Florida, USA, suffered a potentially fatal injury while having breakfast with his wife. The old man was sneezing and coughing at the same time while having his food. Suddenly, he started feeling wet, followed by severe stomach pain. As he lifted the shirt, he found out that several inches of his colon were hanging out of his body. Due to the pressure created inside the body by sneezing, a part of his intestines protruding out from an almost healed incision in his stomach.
According to the family, the old man had fought with prostate cancer and undergone abdominal surgery. The incident occurred the day the doctors removed the sutures. As the incident happened, the old man was rushed to the hospital. An ambulance was called, and paramedics came to help him with support. As there was very little bleeding and no major damage, the patient was successfully transferred to the hospital. The surgeons at the hospital operated on the old man to put his intestines back into his abdomen.
The old man remained under observation for the next six days. He was discharged and recovered without having any complications. The incident was covered by the American Journal of Medical Case Reports. According to them, this kind of incident is very rare where a person’s intestines protrude out of their surgical wound.
A detailed paper was published in the American Journal of Medical Case Reports regarding the incident. The paper mentioned, “During breakfast, the man sneezed forcefully, followed by coughing. He immediately noticed a ‘wet’ sensation and pain in his lower abdomen. Looking down, he observed several loops of pink bowel protruding from his recent surgical site.”
They also mentioned the process that the old man went through to get out of this dangerous situation with the help of the surgeons.
