California Man's Rs 37,000 Grocery List Is Trending: 'What It Takes To Feed 6 Kids'
A California man's massive grocery receipt went viral, sparking a debate about the affordable stores and the items he purchased.

A video from California featuring a man showcasing his grocery haul has gone viral, drawing attention not just for the large number of items purchased but for the staggering total cost— $444 (roughly Rs 37,000) for six kids. The receipt has sparked debate on social media, with users questioning the necessity of many items listed and discussing whether the shopping was justified given the expense.

The viral video was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a handle named Non-Aesthetic Things. The clip begins with a man stating, “Here’s what it takes to feed six kids,” as he reveals his extensive grocery list. The grocery haul from Trader Joe’s includes a wide variety of items such as pizza, waffles, corn dogs, various sauces, cheese and pancakes. Despite individual items mostly priced between $2.99 (about Rs 250) and $3.99 (over Rs 330), the grand total, including tax, amounts to $444.

The caption accompanying the video read, “How much it costs to feed 6 kids.”

Posted just a week ago, the video has rapidly gained online fame, eliciting a flurry of reactions from users who were quick to highlight the abundance of unnecessary items on the shopping list.

One user remarked, “A lot of that stuff is unnecessary though. Ice cream, lattes, marinated artichokes, etc like cmon.”

Another added, “Trader Joe’s is cheap but this person didn’t buy anything to cook, it’s all prepared stuff which is always more. Buy ingredients and make food.”

A viewer pointed out, “Feeding 6 kids at a Trader Joe’s is insane. Take them to Walmart or something.”

Someone else noted, “He went to Trader Joe’s, first mistake. Second, nearly half of everything on the list is organic, which is a luxury. Also things like Gnocci Alla Sorrentina, surfine capers, and Brazil nut body wash (!)? If he’s going to cry about prices, at least have some buying discipline.”

An individual sharing their experience, wrote, “I have four kids. With a simplified shopping list, including flour, butter, milk, oat grains, honey, rice, two whole chickens, cocoa powder, eggs, medium cheddar, ground beef, and olive oil, raisins, coffee beans I spend around $100-150. This selection enables me to prepare ten times the amount of food compared to purchasing ready-made products at the store, which would cost $1,000 (nearly Rs 83,400) or more. And it tastes better.”

One user criticised, “Soo much-processed food. People need to cook whole foods like we used to eat,” while another bluntly added, “Learn to cook.”

The viral footage has accumulated over 17 million views so far.
