Receiving unfavourable judgements about your physical appearance might affect how you feel about your body and cause stress, self-consciousness. Body shaming is the act of demeaning someone by making offensive or disparaging remarks about the size or shape of their body. Remarks questioning your food intake, even if made in jest, constitute body shaming. Unfortunately, this behaviour is relatively prevalent throughout South Asia. The norm is so extreme that a British couple vacationing in Pakistan recently had to deal with an awkward situation as a ticket conductor on the train they were travelling on called the man’s wife “fat” in front of her.

The ticket collector was seen on camera making the lewd comment in front of the couple, and the video was circulated on social media. The incident happened when the British passenger seated in the train introduced his wife to the ticket conductor.

“This is my wife,” the tourist stated. “Not suitable (to be) your wife, I think that she is so healthy,” the TC responded. The traveller enquired, “What do you mean?” “I think she’s less healthy than you. Healthy means fat,” he responded.

The TC added that she would be dissatisfied with his response, and the woman’s look indicated that she was offended by his deplorable comment.

The woman smiled and expressed disappointment as he remarked, “Please don’t mind.” “This is not good Pashtun hospitality,” the British visitor informed the TC at that point. The traveller went on, “You can’t say this. This is not nice”.

The TC then stated that it was a general discussion, to which the visitor responded that this was impolite.

During a brief verbal confrontation, the passenger called out the conductor for his inappropriate comments and accused him of body shaming. The conductor, ironically, continued to defend his comments.

Lastly, the traveller advised the TC that they should show respect and that he shouldn’t have said what he had said about the woman. The British man added that what matters is what his wife thinks and not what the conductor thinks. He needs to understand this and show consideration for the visitors to his nation.

The video concludes with the ticket conductor giving a nod of approval.

People in the comments section were equally unhappy about the incident. A user stated, “Body shaming is unacceptable.”

Another user said, “Bhai ye train walon ki gajab panchayati hoti hai, especially related to women’s weight.”

“That’s why education is important,” said another.

The majority of the people in the comments section felt upset about the whole situation.
