Gautam Gambhir is set to become India’s next head coach, stepping into the role after Rahul Dravid, who finished his tenure with India’s thrilling victory in the T20 World Cup 2024. BCCI secretary Jay Shah made the big announcement on X (formerly Twitter). Gambhir’s first challenge will be a white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, featuring three ODIs and three T20Is later this month.
The two-time World Cup champ officially took over from Dravid on Tuesday. “India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life,” he shared on X. “I’m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true!”

In the meantime, Gambhir is also looking forward to working with VVS Laxman, who is currently leading India as the stand-in head coach on a five-match T20I tour in Zimbabwe. After this tour, India will host Sri Lanka for three T20Is and three ODIs, marking Gambhir’s first assignment as head coach.

“I have always taken pride while donning the Indian jersey during my playing days and it is going to be no different when I take up this new role,” Gambhir said. “Cricket has been my passion and I look forward to working closely with the BCCI, Head of Cricket – Mr VVS Laxman, the support staff, and, most importantly, the players, as we work towards achieving success in the upcoming tournaments,” Gambhir added.
