Travelling long distances with a dog can be tough, especially for larger dogs that can’t fit under-seat carriers. Many dogs face travel restrictions, end up cramped in bags, or suffer the stress of flying in a cargo. To turn this stressful travel experience into a happy one, BARK Air is here which is “world’s first air travel experience designed specifically for dogs first, and their human companions second.” This service ensures dogs can travel comfortably and conveniently with their owners.
The inaugural flight of BARK Air took off from New York on Thursday, May 23. It carried six dogs of varying breeds and 11 humans, including passengers and crew, from New York to Los Angeles.
BARK Air shared the exciting news on Instagram, showcasing some of the heartfelt moments from the flight where dogs enjoyed their time with their owners. “Right now, at an altitude of 30,000 feet, there is a flight filled with dogs. Unlike any flight before it, these dogs are not merely an afterthought, nor are they treated as cargo or a burden to the crew and fellow travelers. Here, dogs are the foremost priority. Every single detail of this flight experience has been crafted with a ‘dogs-first’ mindset,” the caption read.
On the flight, the dogs were pampered with chicken-flavored puppuccinos, special cupcakes and a shoe on a platter to snack on, according to NPR which quoted BARK Chief of Staff Katharine Enos.
“Brooklyn (dachshund) and Eddy (golden) [were] friends and played and the little dogs took nice long naps most of the way. After lunch it was nap time for everyone. No potty accidents on board or stolen food either! Everyone felt connected in the way we were obsessed with our dogs,” Enos told the media portal.
Every flight includes a trained vet tech to monitor and care for the dogs, which expertise in first aid and CPR for all breeds in case of emergencies. Apart from this, a highly skilled concierge will ensure each pup feels comfortable and at ease. The concierge will assess every dog to guarantee they are enjoying their journey and adjusting well to the surroundings.
BARK, a leading global dog brand, partnered with a jet charter company to launch BARK Air. Matt Meeker, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at BARK, shared that the idea came about in 2011. “We believe this initiative will elevate awareness of our brand’s mission and values, introduce more dog lovers to the BARK family, and help enrich the lives of dogs and their people around the world,” Matt said, as quoted by BARK.
