Barigarh is one of the old historical places in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh and it boasts of a fort from the time of the Chandela kings. There is a tunnel in this fort which stuns people even today. Barigarh Fort is also one of the eight major forts of Chandelas. Barigarh means the fort which is surrounded by walls all around whereas the word bari means wall.
The complete information about the history of Barigarh Fort can be found in the book Bundelkhand Ke Durg by well-known author Dr Kashi Prasad Tripathi. According to the book, Barigarh Fort was built by Mahoba Chandel ruler Vijay Varman in 1040 AD. This fort is also known as Bari Durg or Durg Vijay Fort. Alha-Udal, the commanders of Chandel kings used to live in this fort. Barigarh was earlier known as Jujhar Nagar.
The first thing you come across while entering the fort is the Hathidwar gate. Experts say that elephants and horses used to enter the fort through this gate. Elephants and horses were tied inside the fort. The iron pegs used to tie them are still there. However, due to the lush green trees during the rainy season, these pegs are no longer visible.
To the left and right of the Hathi Dwar are rooms made of granite stones. In the left room, you can see the path to the secret tunnel, which is now locked. Also, there is a staircase with the help of which you can go up. Once you reach there, you can see the walls surrounding the fort and from here you can also see the granite wall above the secret tunnel.
A granite wall about 12 km long and more than 20 feet high has been built on the top of the mountain. To ward off invaders, this fort was made so secure that even in the darkness of the night, no one could enter it. The secret tunnel here makes this fort the most secure. The special thing about this tunnel was that during the attack, one could reach Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh safely with the help of the secret tunnel. Experts say that the route of this secret tunnel goes up to Mahoba, 20 km from here.
