YouTube is bringing colours to its feeds for videos and the tests sound like an interesting move for its users. Reports say the platform is using Red Green Blue (RGB) colour codes in the feed and you will see videos based on these colours. Colour-coded feed is a new concept and the fact that YouTube is only testing it with a select group suggests the feature rolling out publicly isn’t a sure thing.
The video streaming app realises the need to freshen up its monotonous feed and reports say YouTube sees the coloured feed as its own way of customising content, just that it is based on colours.
While it is not clear how the colours play a part in recommending content, it seems the feed colours are decided on the hues that YouTube can see in the thumbnails of the videos and segregate them accordingly. You will see these coloured tabs right next to the Music, Recently uploaded and more tabs on the top menu, the report from 9to5Google adds.
Netflix offers its own version of customised search which is based on the person’s watch history. Could YouTube possibly use colours to define and separate these videos from the regular content that a user watches?
It is quite possible that for most YouTube users, these new codes don’t make a big difference but there might be few out there who would prefer their videos to be colour-coded and for them the new tests could be the best way to get their preferences right in front of their eyes at the top of the app.
There will be more changes coming to YouTube in the coming months as the company is also invested in bringing AI-centric features for its users. What we will need to wait and see is if YouTube plans to bring these features to everyone or just its Premium subscribers that currently stands at over 100 million as per the latest update from Google.
