Smartwatch Sales Nosedive Worldwide
Smartwatch Sales Nosedive Worldwide
In spite of these disappointing sales, the tech firm based in Cupertino in the US still dominates the smartwatch market.

Global smartwatch sales reportedly stand at 2.7 million units for Q3 2016, down from 5.6 million in Q3 2015 (-51.6%), according to the latest figures from IDC. Could this be a passing dip or a genuine lack of enthusiasm for the product itself?

Consumers seem to be snubbing smartwatches of all makes and models.

Although Apple hasn't released sales figures for its Watch, IDC estimates 1.1 million unit sales during summer 2016, which makes for a significant 71.6% drop compared to summer 2015.

This could be explained by users holding out for the new model, launched to replace the first-generation Apple Watch at the end of the quarter.

A rebound in sales, spurred by the new model and the Holiday season, are therefore expected for Apple in Q4.

In spite of these disappointing sales, the tech firm based in Cupertino in the US still dominates the smartwatch market. In fact, more than four in ten smartwatches sold worldwide are Apple Watch models.

Next comes Garmin, in second place when it comes to global smartwatch sales with 0.6 million unit sales, increasing market share from 2.3% to 20.5% in the space of a year. Garmin is followed by Samsung (0.4 million), Lenovo (0.1 million) and Pebble (0.1 million).
