New Delhi: Microsoft is officially lowering down the curtains to its Rooms group chat feature that was rolled out with the Windows Phone 8 back in 2012.
Rooms was one of the biggest new features in the phone and allowed users to hold conversations and share photos, notes, and calendars in private groups. However, as the feature failed to create a buzz, the company has decided to take it down from the next version of its OS.
Microsoft said that it is ending support for Rooms as of March and Windows Phone 8 users will only be able to view their existing rooms but not create new ones or send any messages.
As Microsoft gears up for a refreshed OS in the coming months, it is aiming to get rid of the stagnant features in its operating system. The company further said that in the yet-to-be-released Windows 10 update, the group chat feature will not exist. Existing Windows Phone users who update to the latest OS will also be deprived of the feature.
One of the biggest reasons that Rooms failed to hit the right note is because it required all its members using Windows Phones for full functionality, which doesn't fit with Microsoft's current agenda of going open-sourced and allowing third-party support.
