March 26 is commemorated as the Independence Day of Bangladesh to celebrate the country's declaration of independence from Pakistan in 1971.
The declaration was made by Bangladesh's 'Father of the Nation' Sheikh Mujibur Rahman before his arrest by Pakistani forces. Rahman's Awami League had won with a clear majority in the 1970 Pakistan Elections but the existing Pakistan establishment was reluctant to hand over power to Rahman.
Following the declaration a nine-month guerrilla war against the Pakistan Army and their collaborators broke out and after the Indian Army entered the battlefield, the Pakistani forces surrendered on December 16, 1971.
